Sewing 101 – A Pre-Sewing Fundamentals Lecture Class

Welcome to the wonderful and exciting world of sewing! That being said, I’m sure you have questions. Lots of them.

Perfect! That means you’re curious and interested. I love people with questions! I also love to help answer them, and this lecture class was designed to do specifically that.

Every “world” has its own language, and without knowing that language it’s easy to get lost or feel unwelcomed. Whether you sew clothing or quilts, embroider or smock, the foundation of all fabric arts is the fabric itself. This class teaches you the language of fabric as well as other commonly used reference information that is so fundamental to any aspect of sewing that it’s easy to forget not everyone is born knowing these terms. I hate to admit this, but I had been sewing for 20 years before I fully understood the importance of bias and when it was needed and when it wasn’t. We all have questions. Like I said above, that’s a good thing. So bring them with you to this class. Let’s have some fun learning!

What we’ll be covering:

  • Anatomy of fabric: grainline, selvage edge, bias, crossgrain, right and wrong sides
  • Differences between woven and knit fabrics
  • Differences between weave patterns and how that affects the fabric
  • Differences between knit patterns and how that affects the fabric
  • Fibers used to make fabric and how their characteristics
  • Subjective fabric evaluation methods
  • How to pick the right fabric for your project
  • Making sense of thread – what when and why
  • Thread weight and why that can matter
  • Which machine needle to use when and why

Even if you walk out of this class remembering just one thing which you can put into practice, then it’s worth it. So far, everyone who’s taken this class has felt very empowered afterward and was able to immediately implement what they learned to see instant results.

Designed to work with the Basic Mechanical hands-on class and the Pattern Reading 101 lecture to give any sewing enthusiast all the foundational tools they’ll use most often.
