White Vest & Art Quilt

It’s no fun when plans fall through – especially when they fall through due to random seeming stuff.

I got the white vest all finished with the exception of the buttonholes and buttons. Huzzah! It looks great!!!! … for the most part. More on that in the Post Mortem when it’s all finished. Now the last vest that I did, I screwed up on the button hole placement and didn’t notice until it was finished. Instead of being 1/2″ from the edge, they were 1″ and it was really obvious to me. *facepalm* Determined to learn from my mistakes, this time the placement was perfect. Except the machine screwed up and made these cockeyed shanked buttonholes. Instead of a lovely keyhole I ended up with a morphed oblong smeared to the side. WTF?? I’m now in the process of picking them all out.

Jane suggested that I try using the embroidery side of things to set the buttonholes. Interesting idea. Haven’t done that with regular in-the-machine buttonholes. I came home Thursday with the intention of doing just that, only to get home and realize I’d left the silk thread in the machine at work. *sobs* So close and yet so far!!

On the art quilt with the June deadline, I’ve purchased the material. That’s about all I can say on that one, except I’ve done a whole lot of thinking along the lines of “how am I going to get this effect that I want?” and then experimenting with those ideas. I’m planning to actually get started this week. *fingers crossed*

Oh, and I’ve got a rough list of the clothing that I need to plan on making for Great Western War in October. I’ll be finalizing it this weekend, then finding out what material I have on-hand versus what I need. After that, it’s a trip down to the LA Garment/Fabric District to see what we can find. I still prefer F&S to the fabric district – true there are not 100s of stores within F&S but they carry European textile imports which I REALLY LOVE!! That, and I don’t feel like I’m getting ripped off by a shyster, unlike the fabric district where it’s entirely too frequent that the sales guy tries to convince me that the polyester in my hand is actually fine cotton. Ugh.

Another plus is that I had some time yesterday to get my website updated. I’m adding a couple of new sections, one for the embroidery side of what I do and one for the teaching side. They aren’t up yet, but the placeholders are there. I figure that time will pass one way or the other, I may as well commit to doing something that I really have fun with. Hopefully, I can figure out a way to pay the bills at the same time!

Until the next post, Happy Sewing!
